At Sparky's Woodworks, every piece we create is built on a foundation of three uncompromising principles: quality materials, precision craftsmanship, and relentless attention to detail. We don't cut corners — because we believe the things you bring into your home should last not just a lifetime, but multiple lifetimes. Our wood signs, trays, coasters, and décor pieces are built to be passed down to your children, and their children after that — provided they're treated with the care that quality, non-disposable heirlooms deserve.
Sourcing the Best Materials — Right Here in the USA
We source as many materials as possible from USA manufacturers selling made-in-USA goods. The only exceptions are LED and electronic components used in our edge-lit acrylic signs and LED back-lit wood signs, which are sourced overseas. Everything else — from the lumber to the finishes to the paints — is proudly American-made.
Fine Domestic and Exotic Hardwoods
Ninety-nine percent of our wood comes from Woodworker's Source out of Arizona, where every board is hand-picked for quality. We stay away from plywood and economy hardwoods like Birch and Pine. Our top three favorite species are Cherry, Walnut, and Mahogany — each chosen for their beauty, durability, and workability. When we can get a great deal on exotic species like Purpleheart, Padauk, and Bloodwood, we stock up and pass the savings directly on to our customers.
Wood Treatments by MinWax — Made in the USA
We treat every piece with MinWax products, including stains, oils, and protectants. Our most-used oil treatments are Tung Oil and Butcher Block Oil, and we rely on MinWax Polycrylic for outdoor protection. Our go-to stain colors from MinWax are True Black, Natural, and Early American — the backbone of our signature two-tone stain process.
Metallic Paints by DecoArt — Made in the USA
For painted accents and details, we use DecoArt's Extreme Sheen metallic paints — featuring real metal particles, not glitter. The result is a sheen and vibrancy that sets our pieces apart from anything mass-produced. These paints are made in the USA and deliver the kind of finish that photographs beautifully and holds up over time.
How We Put It All Together: Our Craft Process
Great materials are only the beginning. We start by selecting choice wood from our inventory — or ordering it if a project calls for something we don't have on hand. Each board is checked for flatness and imperfections and treated accordingly before any work begins. The design is then precision-carved into the wood surface, after which the piece is hand-sanded and prepped for the finishing department.
Our signature two-tone stain process starts with True Black stain from MinWax, hand-applied to the carved areas using a paintbrush. The piece dries for 24–48 hours, then returns to the shop where all excess black stain is sanded away and the surface is finish-sanded to a super smooth, clean finish on all sides and faces. Next, the base stain color — such as Early American from MinWax — is applied to the entire piece and allowed to dry for another 24–48 hours.
Once fully dry, paint details are applied by hand using a paintbrush, an airbrush, or a combination of both. Every piece receives a minimum of three coats of paint, with proper dry time between each coat. After a final 24–48 hours of dry time, the finished piece is ready for delivery.
